Air pollution with SO2 and smoke (dust particles) is gradually, yet reliably reducing. Bearing in mind the constant increase of traffic density we can claim the development of district heating and gas systems (after the introduction of natural gas) to have contributed most to the decrease of air pollution. The following two diagrams show how the existing buildings which already had their own boiler rooms or individual fire boxes gradually connected to the district heating system.
