Hans O. Nyman 1930-1993 |

A native of Sweden, Hans O. Nyman came to the United States as a district heating consultant to the former Minnesota Energy Agency in 1978. In 1979 he was selected chief operating officer of the newly formed District Heating Development Company, now called District Energy St. Paul. He was named president in 1981.Among his many achievements as head of District Energy St. Paul was the development of a hot water district heating system that now serves over 75 percent of the building space in downtown St. Paul. He initiated an energy-saving cogeneration system that enables the company to produce itsenergy-saving cogeneration system that enables the company to produce its own electricity along with thermal energy. He also led the way for startup of a new district cooling system that began service to downtown St Paul in 1993.
Nyman was born in Sweden and graduated from Stockholm Technical College. He gained his first experience in district heating and cogeneration at a Swedish utility where he converted an old turbine in a sugar beet plant to cogeneration. He later joined Uppsala Energy - a district heating utility serving the city of Uppsala, Sweden Uppsala Energy has one of the world's largest cogeneration systems. Nyman served the Uppsala utility for 16 years before coming to the U.S.
Nyman received numerous awards for his work in the district heating and cooling field. For his work with District Energy St Paul, he received an award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Grand Award for Engineering Excellence from the American Consulting Engineers Council.
In 1990 he received the prestigious Norman Taylor Award from the International District Heating and Cooling Association [Now the International District Energy Association]. The highest honor bestowed on an individual by the Association, the award is presented annually in recognition of distinguished achievement and notable contributions to the district heating and cooling industry. Nyman served as president of that organization in 1990-91. He also was active in the International Energy Agency, and was appointed a personal member of the Swedish District Heating Association.
Nyman passed away on April 4, 1993.
